Hip-hop producer makes beats on iPhone, gets Grammy nomination and feature on Kendrick Lamar’s new record

It may appear strange, but if you really know what you’re doing, you can make money, music, or both at the same time out of literally anything. Some people literally sell air. Others bang out beats on their cracked screen iPhone and do it well enough to get a Grammy nomination, a spot on Kendrick Lamar’s new record, ‘DAMN.’

We’re talking about hip-hop producer Steve Lacey, who literally uses an iPhone to come up with triple-A material. He made complete songs and beats for Lamar and his own Grammy-nominated R&B band with an iPhone, the Garage Band app, some recording gear and musical instruments. The smartphone lets him record ideas and make music anywhere he likes, using it as a portable recorder and digging for inspiration in GarageBand’s library of drums and other musical sounds.

It’s absolutely magnificent how technology has evolved to let a musical mind just grab their phone and get to work, immersed in the moment’s inspiration. And when the work is finished, use the same device to present it to the artist who will give them their big break. Lacy went to the studio with Kendrick Lamar, played him some beats and ideas on the iPhone, and well, the beat on track number 7 from ‘DAMN.’ – ‘Pride’ – is all his!

There was one hurdle Lacey had to deal with, though. And you’ll never guess what it was, can you? It’s the iPhone 7‘s absent headphone jack! Because of it, Steve couldn’t hear what he was playing into the device until he got a recording interface with a headphone jack.

Check out the rest of the story with all the details on Wired, it’s a fascinating read!

T-Mobile to carry the Motorola Moto Z2 Force

Yesterday, when we showed you renders of the upcoming Motorola

Moto Z2 Force

, we told you that the handset might not be a Verizon exclusive. Now, Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) is confirming that the Z2 Force will be released on at least two major US carriers. More exactly, besides landing at Verizon, the Moto Z2 Force will also be launched by T-Mobile.

For now, details on timing and pricing are missing, but we assume we’ll hear more about this in the coming months. What’s probably a safe bet is that the new smartphone will be called Moto Z2 Force Droid Edition on Verizon, and simply Moto Z2 Force on T-Mobile.

Sprint may also offer the Z2 Force, but this hasn’t been confirmed yet (though the fact that we can see the phone’s logo on a yellow background does make us think that Sprint is indeed involved here).

Expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, the Moto Z2 Force allegedly sports a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, and largely resembles the Z Force from 2016. However, the presence of a 3.5mm headset jack, plus the redesigned fingerprint sensor and dual rear camera, do stand out as noticeable differences.

Assuming Motorola will announce the Moto Z2 Force one year after the original Z Force, the new phone should be officially unveiled in June. Well, we’ll be waiting.

Major Lazer and Nicki Minaj’s Run Up music video is all about twerking in a smartphone-obssesed world

If you are at all into hip-hop besides smartphones, please pause the new Kendrick Lamar record for a bit and check out whats’s going on in Major Lazer and Nicki Minaj’s video for ‘Run Up’. Hip-hop the song is not, but the video is all about smartphone obsession wrecking up the party of a lifetime, complete with a (fake) pause to buffer the video stream and Minaj delivering a verse through FaceTime. It’s like the video is based on actual events or something!

At least one of the party goers is probably thinking about the upcoming Android 7.1.1 Nougat for his phone while enjoying himself. Another is probably googling Galaxy Note 8 concept images to stay on top of things. Clearly, the video succeeds in capturing the current status quo, which is mostly about selfies, Snapchats, and people going to clubs to check their phones. We are all guilty!

Laugh it up with the video and send it to your friends instead of the dank memes you lined up before reading the article.

Square chief teases a smart debit card

Square chief teases a smart debit card

There’s no guarantee that Square will launch a debit card, no matter what Dorsey is carrying in his pocket. The company reportedly ditched its payment card out of a reluctance to either antagonize its partners or wade through a tangled financial industry. However, there are a few incentives to at least consider the idea.

For one, Square has previously said it would like to "own both sides of the counter." If it handles both the cards and the payment readers, it doesn’t have to give a cut to anyone else. There’s also the simple matter of catering to a wider customer base. While you can use Apple Pay to go shopping with Square Cash, not everyone can or wants to use an iPhone to make purchases at retail. This would let you use your virtual wallet anywhere that accepts debit cards, regardless of your phone preferences. And simply speaking, a physical card is more inviting to those people hesitant to shop with their handsets. Even if most Square Cash users aren’t about to use a tangible debit card, they might appreciate the option.

Police Searching for This Man Who Allegedly Posted a Murder Live on Facebook

Image sources: Facebook / Cleveland Police Department

The Cleveland Police Department is searching for a man named Steve “Stevie Steve” Stephens in connection with the murder of an elderly man that was broadcast live on Stephens’ Facebook page. In earlier posts, he claimed to be perpetrating an “Easter day slaughter.”

Stephens’ Facebook page has since been deleted. Video of the incident is still going around but we will not post it. According to Heavy, over the course of several posts over four hours, Stephens claimed that he had killed 12-15 others and he wouldn’t stop until his mother and another woman call him on the phone. At one point he wrote, “I’m the #goodguy,” and complained “three years I spent with this bitch … I wish we never met.” The killer made the elderly man say the woman’s name before shooting him.

Police have confirmed that the shooting of the elderly man was real and that it occurred at 635 East 93rd Street. They have warned the public that the suspect is armed and to not approach him. The full description says that he is “6’1" 244lb, bald with a full beard. Wearing dark blue and grey or black striped polo shirt. White or cream-colored SUV.”

It’s still unclear if Stephens is truly the person responsible for the murder or if the claims of other murders are true. But police certainly need to get in contact with this man to determine who the perpetrator is. Another photo is below:

All star codes and self-service short codes for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint phones in one place

All star codes and self-service short codes for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint phones in one place

www.phonearena.com/news/G… report error

All star codes and self-service short codes for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint phones in one place

All carriers around the world and in the US have a bunch of star codes – also known as service codes – that you can punch in your phone’s dialer app (speaking of which, Verizon still supports

rotary phones

, but that’s another story!) and obtain some convenient functionality, such as enabling and disabling specific features in your plan, checking your bill and data usage, getting in touch with customer support, and much more. Especially on T-Mobile, whose excessive list of codes can be barely contained here!

Have a look at the things you can accomplish with your carrier’s star codes, and bookmark the ones you deem useful! While you are at it, check out this list of secret codes for smartphones from popular brands (not all will work, but many are still active). We hope you will find these useful. Enjoy your phone!

On your Verizon phone, dial these codes to activate or deactivate the following features:

  • Anonymous Call Rejection – *77 (Activate) / *87 (Deactivate)
  • Busy Redial – *66 (Activate) / *86 (Deactivate)
  • Call Block – *60 (Activate)
  • Call Forwarding – *72 (Activate) / *73 (Deactivate)
  • Call Trace – *57 (Activate)
  • Calll Waiting – *70 (Deactivate)
  • Per Line Blocking – *82 (Deactivate)
  • Per Call Blocking – *67 (Activate)
  • Speed Dialing 8 – *74 (Activate)
  • Speed Dialing 30 – *75 (Activate)

Enter any of these codes in your dialer and AT&T will send you a free text message with the details you wanted. You can use AT&T’s star codes to get quick account updates in a rather convenient way.

  • Make a payment – *729 / *PAY
  • Check your data and messaging usage – *3282# / *DATA#
  • Check your remaining minutes balance – *646# / *MIN#
  • Check your balance, get next bill due date, and last payment received – *225# / *BAL#
  • Check your upgrade eligibility – *639# / *NEW#
  • Check your order status – *6737# / *ORDR#

T-Mobile supports a huge volume of service codes. For brevity, we’re only listing account and mobile device information codes. Check out the carrier’s call, prepaid, and LineLink service codes on

this page

.

  • Check your balance and last payment – #BAL# (#225#)
  • Check the status of Binge On™ – #BNG# (#264#)
  • To turn Binge On off – #BOF# (#263#)
  • To turn Binge On back on – #BON# (#266#)
  • Check your message usage – #MSG# (#674#)
  • Check data used, data plan, and expiration date – #WEB# (#932#)

  • Check your Family Allowance usage – #FAM# (#326#)
  • Display the mobile device’s IMEI number – *#06#
  • Locate a nearby taxi service ($1.75 per use) – #TAXI (#8294)

There are three things to know about Sprint codes:

Airtime charges apply when dialing * and # numbers with the exception of *2, *3, *4, *5, *7, *911, #911, 611 and #ROAD.
Star or pound codes may or may not work in a roaming coverage area (including *2, *3, *4, *5, or #ROAD).
The list was last updated in 2012, so some of these may or may not still work. We’ll try to get in touch with Sprint to bring more up-to-date star codes.

  • Access to the Care self-service IVR and Care call centers – *2
  • Option 3 order accessories – #222
  • Payments made through Sprint phones through the Pay by Phone Automated IVR – *3

Star Wars’ Vintage Collection Returns, and More Toy News From Celebration

Star Wars’ Vintage Collection Returns, and More Toy News From Celebration

All Photos Courtesy Hasbro

Hasbro’s Star Wars Celebration panel debuted some of the new figures for 2017 and 2018, including a brand-new Thrawn and a surprising fan poll winner from the Expanded Universe. However, the biggest and coolest news has to be the return of the beloved Vintage Collection.

Hasbro introduced some of the latest Black Series collectors figures. These include two San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives: a 6-inch Luke Skywalker and landspeeder, which was already previewed earlier this week, and a 6-inch Thrawn, who’s sporting a saucy eyebrow. It’s actually the first figure of Thrawn in this scale (there’s already a smaller Rebels version), and as well as a normal release later this year there’ll be an exclusive version of Thrawn at San Diego Comic-Con, including the figure and a bunch of accessories from his office as seen in Star Wars Rebels. Yes, there’s even the holy grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!

Speaking of saucily-eyebrowed Imperial officers, releasing alongside Thrawn this Fall is a 6-inch Grand Moff Tarkin, complete with aforementioned eyebrow and an an interrogation droid. It’s the first time Tarkin’s had an action figure in five years, full stop, which is kind of insane for such a big character in the Star Wars galaxy.

Then, you’ve got Jaina Solo, who was the winner of a fan poll for a new Black Series figure last year. This is a pretty big deal, since she’s an Expanded Universe character who was basically retconned out of existence at this point. Created by Timothy Zahn in the 1994 EU novel The Last Command, she was a Jedi Master of the New Jedi Order and the daughter of Han and Leia Organa Solo (along with her twin, Jacen, and younger brother Anakin Solo). However, in the established canon, Ben Solo is their only known child, so seeing a figure version of the daughter they “officially” never had is kind of special.

Of course, then you’ve got the real big deal: The return of The Vintage Collection. The Vintage Collection was a line of collector-focused, 3.75-inch super articulated action figures that were basically cancelled in 2012, outside of a few retailer exclusives especially made for The Force Awakens and Rogue One. Since that cancellation, Hasbro’s focused on two kinds of Star Wars figures: the more basic 3.75-inch figures for kids and casual fans (with simplistic five points of articulation), and the 6-inch Black Series figures, like the ones you see above. This meant fans who’d gotten used 3.75-inch high-quality super articulated figures for a decade of Star War toy collecting were finding themselves in the situation of having to switch over to the 6″ series if they wanted to have the better detailed, more poseable figures… paying double the price, and starting their collections over from scratch.

The Vintage Collection’s return is a very big deal for hardcore Star Wars toy fans, and a nice gesture from Hasbro to return to a style of Star Wars toys that’s practically been gone for half a decade now. At the panel, Hasbro announced that Rey is the first figure in the revived series (you can see what she looks like in the above video from FLYGUY), and they’re holding a fan poll to determine the next one. You can expect the Vintage Collection in Spring 2018.

Cleveland police seek suspect in murder streamed on Facebook

The Cleveland Police Department has confirmed it’s looking for a suspect, Steve Stephens who committed a homicide and streamed the crime on Facebook Live. Sadly, this isn’t the first homicide broadcast on the platform, however, in this case, it was intentional. According to Heavy.com, the video showed Stephens speaking to an elderly man before shooting him through the window of a car. On the stream, Stephens claimed to have killed others and threatened to continue. Police report that he is armed and dangerous and are warning people not to approach if they see him.

Lady Gaga headlined the Coachella Music Festival last night, and used the opportunity to debut a new song during her set, “The Cure”, which went on sale last night.

The song is an upbeat pop number, and a bit of a return to form after the country-influenced Joanne. It’s now available on a variety of streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal.

Lady Gaga performed during this year’s Superbowl Halftime show, and will go on a major world tour later this year.

Android Police, in collaboration with OnLeaks, has published 360 degree render videos of the upcoming Moto C and Moto C Plus smartphones.

We have already seen leaked images of the two phones in the past but these new videos show the phones in even more detail. Granted this isn’t the real deal but it’s as close to it that we can get right now.

Not much else is known about these two devices than what we had reported in the past.
